چکیده

—A time-frequency approach for improved instantaneous frequency estimation of noisy signals has been proposed. This approach is based on the averaged multiple time-frequency distribution obtained by using L-spectrograms with different values of the scaling parameter L. The L-spectrogram with low value of L is characterized by large bias and low variance, while higher L decreases the bias and increases the variance of the instantaneous frequency estimator. The averaged L-spectrogram is considered to provide a good bias-variance compromise, leading to low MSE of the instantaneous frequency estimation in the presence of noise. The proposed approach has been tested in the experiments with different values of signal to noise ratio, showing its superior performance when compared to individual L-spectrograms.

Detecting non-stationary signals using fractional Fourier methods

Signal processing methods have been developed over the last 60 years to detect and analyse complicated non-stationary signals, such as speech and seismic activity. The traditional method for analysing such signals is through a spectrogram based on the short-time Fourier transform (STFT). However, the STFT is not ideal since it reflects only the stationary properties contained in any short time-...

Optimization of Weighting Factors for Multiple Window Spectrogram of Event-Related Potentials

This paper concerns the mean square error optimal weighting factors for multiple window spectrogram of different stationary and nonstationary processes. It is well known that the choice of multiple windows is important, but here we show that the weighting of the different multiple window spectrograms in the final average is as important to consider and that the equally averaged spectrogram is n...

Multiple window spectrogram and time-frequency distributions

We extend the spectrum estimation method of Thomson to non-stationary signals by formulating a multiple window spectrogram. The traditional spectrogram can be represented as a member of Cohen’s class of time-frequency distributions (TFDs), where the smoothing kernel is the Wigner distribution of the signal temporal window. We show the unusual shape of the Cohen’s class smoothing kernels corresp...

Recognition of Multiple PQ Issues using Modified EMD and Neural Network Classifier

This paper presents a new framework based on modified EMD method for detection of single and multiple PQ issues. In modified EMD, DWT precedes traditional EMD process. This scheme makes EMD better by eliminating the mode mixing problem. This is a two step algorithm; in the first step, input PQ signal is decomposed in low and high frequency components using DWT. In the second stage, the low freq...
